Bathtub faucets — also called tub fillers — seem simple but require more careful specification than standard bathroom faucets. The wrong choice leads to slow filling times or awkward reach.

Mounting configuration comes first. Deck-mounted faucets install directly onto the bathtub rim. Wall-mounted faucets come out of the wall above the tub. Floor-mounted tub fillers stand on the bathroom floor next to freestanding tubs. Each requires different rough-in plumbing during construction or renovation. Choose your tub first, then match the faucet mounting type.

Flow rate matters enormously for bathtubs. A standard bathroom faucet flows at 1.5 gallons per minute — fine for hand washing but painfully slow for filling a tub. Look for tub fillers with flow rates of 5 to 8 gallons per minute to fill a standard tub in reasonable time.

Reach is another critical dimension. Measure from the faucet mounting point to the center of the tub. A faucet that does not extend far enough over the tub leaves you leaning awkwardly to reach the water stream. For freestanding tubs, consider a floor-mounted filler positioned to land water directly in the center.

Material quality follows the same rules as other faucets. Solid brass construction offers the best durability. For finishes, brushed nickel and stainless steel hide water spots effectively, while polished chrome requires frequent wiping to stay spotless.
